Switzerland's Zermatt ski resort reopens after heavy snow
Groups of tourists took on their way again to the reopened Zermatt ski resort on Friday to dive inside the snow world for fun, as train service and road transportation to the resort were restored.
Following heavy snowfall and rain on Tuesday, road and rail access to Zermatt in southern Switzerland was cut off as the region was facing the maximum level of avalanche risk, affecting some 13,000 guests.
Local authorities said that a level 5 avalanche risk, the highest risk level, was once declared in parts of canton Valais where Zermatt is located.
The accumulated snow in days reached record thick for the same period in years. Although the alert of avalanche risk was relieved, high possibility still existed and guests were advised to follow closely the weather reports.
"This situation, the last time, it was about nine years ago, when we had so much snowfall. We also had that the last few days. Because we are so well prepared, nobody was injured. There was no danger. (What's) important is that we always inform the people that they know what's going on, and when everything is informed, everything goes well. So you don't have any problem up here in the mountain," said Janine Imesch, marketing director of Zermatt tourism authorities.
