Myanmar-Peace Process
Myanmar peace process trudging forward, despite difficulties
The peace process of Myanmar is still trudging forward amid difficulties, according to analysts.
The Myanmar government has kept pushing forward the process for decades, striving to end the continuous armed conflicts between government forces and armed groups since its independence in 1948.
From 2011 to 2015, the government, led by Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), held dozens of peace talks with over a dozen armed groups. Eight groups signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Accord (NCA) on Oct. 15, 2015 after the talks.
The number of signatories to the accord added up to 10 on Tuesday, when the incumbent government led by the National League for Democracy (NLD) and two minority armed groups signed the NCA in Nay Pyi Taw.
The two fresh signatories, New Mon State Party (NMSP) and the Lahu Democratic Union (LDU), are the first two armed groups signing the NCA in time of the incumbent government. They will join the upcoming third meeting of the 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference.
Following the 2015 initiation of the NCA, the 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference was held twice during the term of the incumbent government in August 2016 and May 2017.
The second meeting incorporated 37 adopted principles into a union accord in the country's peace process for the first time in Myanmar's history.
The third meeting of the Panglong Peace Conference is likely to be held later this month for further discussion of unfinished fundamental principles on federalism as well as the formulation of new principles.
