Northwest China province to promote salt lake circular economy: lawmaker
Qinghai Province in northwest China has developed its own circular economy by taking advantage of the resources in its salt lakes, according to a national lawmaker on Tuesday.
At the ongoing session of China's top legislature –- the National People's Congress, lawmakers from across the country have gathered to share experience and discuss future development.
Meng Hai from Qinghai Province brought a sample of their products, magnesium metal, to the reporters.
His province has been exploring how to better make use of the brine, or salty water, of the province's many salt lakes.
From potassium extraction and sylvite production, the province now has moved forward to waste recycling. In the past, the magnesium contained in the waste brine was considered a hazard, as it can pollute soil and drinking water. Now, Qinghai has been able to turn the magnesium in waste brine into a metal and something profitable.
"This product is made by deep-processing the waste brine from the salt lake after potassium has been extracted. The magnesium in the brine has been turned from a pollutant into a treasure. An integrated industrial system involving sylvite production, salt lake chemical engineering and natural gas chemical engineering has been formed around the brine," he said.
Meng said his province will push ahead with its circular economy, in a hope to generate more green development.

"In the past two years, we have made major progress in developing circular economy. Today, I have brought the best product in our green economy -- magnesium metal.
