China reveals impact of price changes in various areas on CPI
China's National Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday issued a semi-annual report on price changes in food, housing, clothing and transportation, showing the influences of those prices on the country's consumer price index (CPI) in the first half of 2019.
Food prices account for 30 percent of China's CPI, which impacts the index greatly.
The report showed that, from January to June, China's monthly year-on-year percentage gain in food prices continued to rise.
Vegetable and fruit prices began to climb at the beginning of March. Apart from an insufficient supply caused by poor weather conditions and natural disasters, the time gap between inventory shortage and the harvest of fresh fruits also resulted in a price increase.
In spite of that, prices of vegetables and fruits will soon return to reasonable levels once the seasonal factors are gone. The latest data also showed some decline in those prices.
Pork prices, which started to soar in March, are now in a new round of rising cycle. Affected by swine fever and other factors, the year-on-year rise in pork prices has clawed back from negative to positive, leading to a faster growth.
With regards to the food prices in the second half of 2019, experts said that vegetable prices are expected to continue their slipping after the start of its growing season, while pork prices are likely to rise slightly.
The impact of housing prices, including rent and bills, on the CPI of China was also obvious in the first six months of this year, coming second to food prices in the CPI data.
In terms of rent, specifically, except for the 2.7 percent increase after the Spring Festival, the growth rate in the other months was 2.4 percent or less - which was similar compared to a year earlier.
It also showed that the policy effect of standardizing the country's housing rental market in recent years has begun to appear.
The prices of water, electricity and gas only grew by 1.4 percent year on year, which was lower than the percentage gain in the CPI in those six months.
Moreover, official data showed that prices of home appliances such as TVs and fridges dropped from January to June, but the increase in the prices of labor-based household services remained at around five percent year on year, with a peak of 7.6 percent reached in January just before the Spring Festival.
What maintained a moderate growth were clothing prices in China, which had a two percent rise in the first six months.
However, the rising trend in cost of labor can also be seen in clothing processing services, with the prices climbing to over four percent each month.
Transportation prices in the CPI data showed an overall downward trend in the first half of 2019, while the prices of their influence factors went either up or down.
Petrol prices kept declining in most months out of the first six, and prices of vehicles kept going down by one percent for six consecutive months.
But at the same time, the vehicle maintenance cost continued to rise by about 2.7 percent each month.
