China-FM Briefing/BRICS
China respects Brazil's decision not to continue "BRICS Plus" mode in upcoming summit
The "BRICS Plus" pattern promoted by China has proved to be fruitful, but China respects Brazil's decision not to continue this pattern in the upcoming BRICS summit in Brasilia, a foreign ministry spokesman said on Friday.
Spokesman Geng Shuang made remarks after being required to comment on the fact that the BRICS Summit to be held in Brazil will not hold the "BRICS Plus" meeting.
"Since the establishment, the BRICS mechanism has been closely related with the destiny of the vast emerging market and developing countries. As emerging powers, BRICS countries have the responsibility to strengthen cooperation with other developing countries. That is also a fine tradition which has been followed by BRICS countries. In 2017, China proposed the 'BRICS Plus' pattern. During the BRICS Xiamen Summit, China held the Dialogue of Emerging Market and Developing Countries and also for the first time invited guests and guest countries from worldwide to the dialogue. Such a move was highly praised by all parties. South Africa continued such practice and achieved positive results by holding a 'BRICS Plus' dialogue in Johannesburg summit last year," said Geng.
According to Geng, the "BRICS Plus" pattern which can promote joint development of different countries has been adopted by China in many activities this year.
"This year, we have adopted the 'BRICS Plus' pattern in many activities by inviting representatives from some emerging markets and developing countries to attend. Such move has not only expanded the circle of friends of BRICS countries, but also promoted common development of different countries. China respects the chair country's decision of not holding 'BRICS Plus' leaders' dialogue during the summit in Brasilia," said Geng.
The "BRICS Plus" pattern emphasizes openness, inclusiveness, cooperation and mutual benefit, which is highly consistent with the BRICS spirit.
The purpose of the "BRICS Plus" pattern is to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between BRICS countries and other emerging markets and developing countries, promote the establishment of broader partnerships and facilitate common development and prosperity on a larger scale.
