China-Buoy Tender
New Chinese buoy tender facilitates marine monitoring in deeper, farther sea areas
China's first home-made buoy tender will solve difficulties in buoy deployment and maintenance, greatly facilitating the country's marine monitoring in deeper and farther sea areas.
Xiangyanghong 22, the 3,000-ton buoy tender, was delivered in Shanghai on Tuesday. It will be used to deploy, patrol, recycle and repair large buoys and subsurface buoys. It is China's only working boat with the ability to hoist a large buoy that is 10 meters in diameter and weighs 60 tonnes.
According to experts, buoy is currently the most important means of marine monitoring. The monitoring agencies obtain ocean information by deploying different monitoring instruments on the buoy platform. Due to lack of buoy tenders, marine monitoring buoys in China used to be placed offshore, and there were also problems with the deployment and maintenance of large buoys.
"We used a tug ship to tow the buoys back to the mother port when we needed to recollect or repair them. It was time consuming with a low efficiency, and it was relatively not safe when operating at sea," said Yu Liangxiong, chief builder of Xiangyanghong 22.
In addition to its ability to work in deep and far sea areas, Xiangyanghong 22 is made of low-temperature and high-strength steel and is able of buoy deployment in extremely cold environments such as the North and South Poles with main performance reaching international advanced levels.
