Spring Festival Gala: "lucky red envelopes" to be distributed via video interaction
China Media Group announced Wednesday that Chinese mobile video app "Kuaishou" will be its partner distributing digital "hongbao" (red envelopes containing lucky money) in the form of video interaction during this year's China Central Television Spring Festival Gala.
Starting from the 2015 Spring Festival Gala, CCTV began to partner with tech companies to launch red envelope games to lure more watchers. This year, "hongbao" will go to audience through video apps for the first time.
One billion yuan (around 130 million U.S. dollars) will be sent out during the lunar new year's eve, hitting a record high in the five-year history of the activity.
An warm-up game of collecting cards to share lucky money worth 100 million yuan will start from Jan. 1, 2020.
Kuaishou is a short video app boasting over 200 million monthly active users and 400 million daily active users in China. The most popular contents in the app are about food, make-up, music, sports, dance and pets, among others.
During the Spring Festival, Chinese children typically receive "hongbao" from the elders in their families, which are meant to bring good luck to them for the coming year.
But now children are not the only lucky ones. The custom went digital when China's most popular instant messaging app Wechat added a function of sending "hongbao" in 2014. Later, it partnered with CCTV to send out "hongbao" during the 2015 Spring Festival Gala. The app sent out a total of 500 million yuan (around 71 million U.S. dollars) worth of "hongbao" to the audience on the Spring Festival eve.
Other partners of CCTV on "hongbao" distribution during the Spring Festival Gala include China's tech giants Alibaba and Baidu.
