China-Firecracker Accident
Boy blasted into air after throwing firecracker in septic tank
An eight-year-old boy was seriously injured by an exploding manhole cover after he threw a firecracker into a septic tank in Dunhuang City, northwest China's Gansu Province, on Friday.
The accident was captured by the community's security video camera. According to the video footage, the accident happened about 16:00. Two boys were walking on their way home, and passed a manhole cover.
One of the boys lit a firecracker and threw it into the septic tank through the hole of the manhole cover. The manhole cover was suddenly blasted about three meters into the air, and the boy was also tossed into air.
"I was in my house, and I heard a bang. I thought it was caused by an explosion of heating pipe or something. I came out and found a little boy was lying on the ground, and the manhole cover was elsewhere. I wiped the blood on the boy's mouth, and picked him up. I called my wife to find the boy's family, but before the family arrived, I took him to the hospital," said Mr. Wu, a local resident.
The boy is receiving treatment in ICU at local hospital.
