USA-Boeing Order Drop
Boeing reports more cancellations than orders in 2019
Boeing on Tuesday reported negative commercial airplane orders for 2019 for the first time in three decades as the global grounding of its 737 MAX jets undermined the aerospace giant's business.
The U.S. plane maker in 2019 handed over 380 aircraft, a 14-year low compares with a record 863 deliveries by European rival Airbus. Boeing delivered 806 planes in 2018, a high for the company.
The order book for its once popular 737 Max shrank by 183 planes following the global grounding of the troubled jet since last March. The airplane involved in two fatal crashes that took the lives of 346 people.
All the 157 passengers and crew members aboard a 737 MAX jet operated by Ethiopian Airlines were killed soon after the Nairobi-bound flight took off from Addis Ababa on March 10, 2019.
The plane is the same type as the Indonesian Lion Air jet that crashed in October 2018, just minutes after take-off from Jakarta, killing all the 189 people on board.
A fault occurred during last September's testing of the new wide-body passenger aircraft 777X, which Boeing pinned high hopes on, also resulting in a decline in orders for this model.
