Xi's speech at APEC meeting paves way for in-depth Asia-Pacific cooperation: experts
Overseas experts lauded Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech at Friday's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting, saying it leads the way for in-depth Asia-Pacific cooperation.
Xi, who delivered a keynote speech at the meeting from Beijing via video link, called for jointly building an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future featuring openness, inclusiveness, innovation-driven growth, greater connectivity, and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Experts from multiple countries believe the speech provided important guidance for further deepening Asia-Pacific cooperation and contributed to building an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future.
"President Xi Jinping cited the Malaysian saying, ‘to climb the hill together and go down the ravine together,’ meaning in the face of critical problems such as the COVID-19 pandemic and economic recovery, the whole world should tide over the difficulties together. Xi's speech proved to the world once again that China's willingness to open and be inclusive in every field is not ideological in any way, and that China is willing to treat every participant of regional economic integration equally," said Oleg Ostroukhov who served as former TASS correspondent in China.
Singaporean economist Tommy Xie believes Xi's speech reflects China’s commitment to multilateralism.
"My key takeaway from President Xi's speech yesterday was that China is looking to join the CPTPP. I think that's quite an encouraging sign, because we just signed RCEP about a week ago. So, I think that commitment from China is that China is still committed to multilateralism. China has become one of the largest driving forces, I think that will continue to drive the whole region towards globalization, towards economic integration," said Xie, who serves as an economist with the Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation, Limited (OCBC Bank).
Moreover, President Xi's initiative to build the APEC region into a community with a shared future dovetails with the ideas of most emerging economies from the region, according to a Chilean expert.
"'Community with a shared future’ is a concept that President Xi Jinping has been advocating, and it agrees with the ideas of most emerging economies of APEC members. The member states should work closely together to build the Asia-Pacific region into a unified free trade area and further strengthen regional integration to serve the people of all countries," said Enrique Paris Horvitz, dean of the faculty of economics and business at Saint Thomas University.
Facing the global economic downturn caused by COVID-19 and rising unilateralism and protectionism, it is only by strengthening cooperation for mutual benefit and win-win results can APEC contribute to the steady recovery of the regional and global economies, says Oscar van Heerden, an international relations scholar from South Africa. However, the unilateralism, trade protectionism and exclusionism pursued by some countries run counter to the general trend of world development, which will get them nowhere, he added.
"I think what President Xi Jinping was really alluding to was that we live in a global village, and China is beginning to apply the adage of 'we think global but we act local'. And in that way, China is basically saying that what we do with regards to our cooperation with other nations is to look at win-win situations, particularly on trade, because we are not about exclusion," said Heerden.
Jayson Pyne, who is an expert in international economics and trade in South Africa agreed that mutually beneficial policies of cooperation between the international community is needed. Openness and inclusivity are needed for optimized multilateralism.
"President Xi's speech was an excellent reflection of the expected inclusivity from the APEC region. I'm really confident in the interconnectivity that he also mentioned. For me that is absolutely crucial for this agreement to actually be a success. The interconnectivity is really about opening the economic borders, removing barriers to entry, promoting inter country competition and effectively ensuring win-win cooperation between all countries. What I would like to see is all countries benefiting equally," said Payne.
Former South Korean Prime Minister Lee Soo-sung voiced his support for President Xi's initiative to build a community with a shared future for mankind, because it goes in line with the global trend of the times.
"I quite agree with President Xi's advocating the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind, for the world needs a community like this to fight against the pandemic, prevent war, and jointly maintain world peace," said Lee.
