China-Panda Cubs/Naming
Pandas cubs awaiting for public naming ideas in northwest China's Shaanxi
Four panda babies born in northwest China's Shaanxi Province are waiting for the public to give them names.
A ceremony was held Tuesday at a research center dedicated to the study of the Qinling giant panda, calling for fresh ideas from all Chinese panda lovers to name the four giant pandas born in 2020 at the center.
The mass naming activity will run through January till the last day of the new year month on email.
"We aim to make the public learn about and participate more in the protection of giant pandas at Qingling. Through the naming activity, we mainly want to remind people in Shaanxi that we have pandas in our province and that we are breeding and raising them in the Qinling research center. We hope to promote the panda culture of Qingling through this way of public naming," said Lei Yinghu, director of the research center and deputy dean of Shaanxi Academy of Forestry.
The Qinling giant panda research center, established in 2018 in Shaanxi's capital city of Xi'an, is affiliated under the Shaanxi Academy of Forestry. Upon consistent efforts in the raising, breeding and disease control of the giant pandas, the center has considerably contributed in expanding the panda group in the Qinling mountainous area in recent years. The center now owns 11 female giant pandas at proper age and four male pandas available for childbearing.
As a natural boundary between the country's north and south, the Qinling Mountains are home to a huge variety of plants and rare wildlife such as giant pandas, golden monkeys and crested ibis.
Great efforts have been made in recent years to protect the Qinling Mountains, considered by many as a window into China's progress in ecological conservation.
