        <description role="CCTVPLUSdescrole:Storyline" xml:lang="en">
The Shenzhou-23 crewed spaceship, set for launch on Sunday, has been adaptively improved with enhanced porthole protection against space debris, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) said at a press conference at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the northwest on Saturday.

China on Nov. 25, 2025 successfully launched the Shenzhou-22 spaceship to provide a return vessel for the three Shenzhou-21 astronauts in orbit, marking the accomplishment of the first emergency launch mission in the country's manned space program.

Within 20 days, all participating research and testing units collaborated and completed a series of critical tasks, including risk assessment, solution analysis and decision-making, personnel and material deployment, crew return aboard a replacement vessel, as well as an emergency launch, offering a world-class example of managing an in-orbit emergency.

Speaking at the press conference, Zhang Jingbo, spokesman of the CMSA, briefed the media about the successful experience from the emergency launch mission and the improvement made for the Shenzhou-23 spaceship.

The emergency launch mission fully proved the scientificity and effectiveness of the "rolling backup" model, with one combination of the spaceship and rocket for launch and another combination designated as backup for each mission, said Zhang.

China's manned space program is always very conscious of risks. Since the in-orbit construction of the Tiangong Space Station commenced in 2021, all missions have been carried out in the "rolling backup" model, said the spokesman.

"Facing the unexpected situation, the mission headquarters mobilized forces immediately, coordinated resources to the greatest extent and quickly drew up plans for bringing the crew back and launching an emergency spaceship. As planned, the astronauts returned safely, and the backup spaceship successfully docked with the space station. This real-world scenario gave a comprehensive validation to the scientificity, completeness and effectiveness of the 'rolling backup' approach. It also provided us with invaluable experience for the long-term safe operation of the space station, as well as a successful example for the international space community on effectively handling emergencies," said Zhang.

The spokesman said that the emergency mission further reinforced the development philosophy of putting the safety of astronauts first. Throughout all manned space missions, the entire project has always made the safety of mission, especially the safety of the astronauts, the top priority and the ultimate goal.

In assessing risks, the team always assumes the worst situation and measures the world by the highest standard. By going through this major risk test, the team further strengthened the concept that in manned space missions, human life should be the first priority, he said.

Through this emergency mission, the team has gained a clearer picture of the space debris environment and the requirement for protecting in-orbit spaceship from the debris, which is an invaluable practical experience for managing and handling similar risks in future missions, said Zhang.

"The Shenzhou-23 spaceship, which will be launched soon, has undergone adaptive improvements in porthole protection against space debris, enhancing the Shenzhou spaceships' capability in preventing space debris," said the spokesman.

The Shenzhou-23 crewed spaceship is scheduled to be launched at 23:08 on Sunday (Beijing Time) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, according to the CMSA.

Shenzhou-23 is the seventh crewed mission in the application and development stage of China's space station, and the 40th flight mission of China's manned space program.
