Africa Day is observed annually on May 25 to mark the establishment of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, now the African Union (AU). This year's commemoration is held under the theme "63 Years of Unity, Integration and Development," while the AU has also designated 2026 as the Year of "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063." AU officials expressed optimism regarding the continent's growing potential. "Our continent is on the rise, slowly, smoothly, but with conviction and determination. Africa's role and position are reaffirmed day in and day out on the global stage -- today, a member of the G20, tomorrow, hopefully, two permanent members of the UN Security Council. The continent global GDP is expected to reach 10 trillion dollars in a few years' time. The youth of this continent are the powerhouse that all continents are looking at with envy. So, let us renew our faith in the power of African unity and the resourceful potential of our continent and our peoples," said African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf. Young Africans attending the celebrations emphasized the need for innovation, integration and stronger African representation in global institutions. "In the next decade for Africa, I want to see Africa as a global player, Africa having its own stand where it shows the capacity that the continent has in terms of development, in terms of integration, in terms of innovation. And I want to see young Africans also leading global institutions, so we want to see that leadership from Africa through our diversity. As we are united through this institution of the African Union, we want to ensure that we reflect our unity on the global stage," said a young representative at the event. The day also highlighted Africa's growing international partnerships. Among Africa's biggest global partners is China, with which relations have extended across many sectors in recent years. Addressing the Africa Day event, Jiang Feng, head of the Chinese Mission to the AU, said China will continue supporting Africa's efforts to strengthen its development. He pointed to IT development in particular. "We will continue to firmly support Africa in safeguarding its digital sovereignty, building independent and secure digital infrastructure, cultivating local talent, seizing opportunities in the digital economy wave and narrowing the digital divide," Jiang said.
