Kenyan President William Ruto has defended the plan as part of national preparedness and Kenya's partnership with the United States. His administration has described the move as a strategic health partnership with the U.S., saying it also ties Kenya directly to global emergency response networks. The U.S. government's late-May decision to designate the Laikipia air force base near Nanyuki for quarantining citizens potentially exposed to Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo has drawn local and international scrutiny. While some residents said they are awaiting more information from authorities, others voiced concern over hosting a facility linked to one of the world's deadliest viruses. "I strongly oppose because Ebola is a very contagious disease, extremely contagious. So we cannot go import the disease here and bring it to us and tell us you are going to contain it. Totally unacceptable," said Pauline Kinge, a local resident. "What we are seeing is making us sad. First, there's no community participation which is the first thing they should have done. You just can't do things by force," said Boniface Nyamu, another local resident. The matter has since moved to the corridors of justice. Kenya's High Court on Tuesday has ordered the government to disclose details of the proposed US-linked Ebola quarantine center, halting its establishment. The court also extended the suspension on the implementation of the Kenya-US deal, pending the hearing and determination of a case challenging the now controversial arrangement which critics argue could put public health at risk. The order effectively pauses any immediate steps toward establishing the facility as legal questions surrounding the project are considered. The court has also barred the admission of individuals exposed to the virus, pending a legal challenge by the Kenyan Law Society and local petitioners. But Nanyuki residents remain defiant.
