<headline xml:lang="en">China launches new campaign to boost sports industry development</headline>
        <description role="CCTVPLUSdescrole:Storyline" xml:lang="en">
China's General Administration of Sport has recently released a plan to build a leading sports nation during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030).

As the first national-level special plan with the theme of building a leading sports nation, it sets clear targets that by 2030, around 40 percent of China's population will regularly participate in physical exercise, with total industry value exceeding seven trillion yuan (about 1.03 trillion U.S. dollars).

The plan also calls for strengthening the construction of public fitness facilities and encouraging the development of "golden corner and silver edge" spaces and projects, meaning to maximize the value of existing sports resources and facilities. It also aims to deepen the integration of nationwide fitness with public health, and promote the integration of sports and healthcare.

Progress has already been made across the country.

At a youth sports park in north China's Tianjin Municipality, intelligent fitness facilities and standard ball courts have become popular destinations for people to exercise and have fun this summer.

Smart rowing machines and intelligent exercise bikes allow residents to work out daily and even compete with others through multiplayer simulation on large screens.

"Riding the exercise bike works out your leg muscles. Before, we had to go to the cultural center to play," said a Tianjin resident.

"There are 33 activities available at the sports park. The number of visitors has increased nearly tenfold compared with the past," said Zhao Qian, the head of the park.

In addition to large sports parks, pocket parks scattered across neighborhoods have also been fully utilized.

An old residential community in Hexi, built over 30 years ago, underwent renovation this year. The community garden has been equipped with elderly-friendly seating and convenient fitness equipment, and the once quiet space has come back to life.

"I used to have to go elsewhere for a walk, but now it's great to walk here. I come here every day," said a Tianjin resident.

Tianjin has put over 30 new pocket parks into use this year. In the next five years, the city plans to add 250 more pocket parks near communities, schools and hospitals, while also implementing elderly-friendly, child-friendly and accessibility upgrades.

In Hangzhou City of east China's Zhejiang Province, newly built pickleball courts are drawing a steady stream of residents for sports and recreation.

"It's great to have such a large facility right at our doorstep. We can book it and come play. It's good," said a local resident.

This nearly 11,000-square-meter space was once a wasteland littered with debris and overgrown with weeds. After being transformed into pickleball courts, professional operators were brought in.

Through sports training, study tours and other business models, the facility not only sustains itself but also boosts consumption in the surrounding area.

"The idle land has become a vibrant space and a gathering place for many people to exercise. The surrounding village cafes and campsites are also seeing a boom in business," said Zhang Yu, a member of the Party Working Committee of Canal Subdistrict in Linping.

The plan calls for a scientific distribution of grassroots fitness facilities, improving the utilization efficiency and maintenance of existing venues, and addressing the problem of prioritizing construction over operation and maintenance.

In Taizhou City of east China's Zhejiang Province, a long-abandoned swimming pool has been transformed into a sports park, featuring a seven-a-side football field, spectator stands and shared parking spaces, meeting the diverse sports needs of local residents.

"Having such a spacious venue near my home means I can play football as soon as I step out. It's very convenient," said a resident.

"Our 'golden corner and silver edge' projects are mostly concentrated in precise small spaces with costs ranging from 5 million to 10 million yuan. Each project adopts a 'commerce plus sports plus operation' model," said local official Mei Yi.

According to statistics, Zhejiang has built 53,100 "golden corner and silver edge" sports venues to date, and plans to build or renovate 10,000 more sports facilities near residential areas in 2026.
