In an interview with the China Media Group (CMG), Cai reflected on her remarkable journey from a book editor to the recipient of the highest international honor for creators of children's books at the age of 80. Looking back over a stellar career which culminated in her being announced as the Andersen award winner back in April, Cai stressed that nothing in life is wasted and that even hardship is something to be embraced. Born in 1946 in Changsha City of central China's Hunan Province, Cai is widely regarded as a pioneer of original Chinese picture books. Her career in this field began in the 1970s, when she created illustrations and short serialized comics for children's publications. In the early 1980s, she transitioned into book editing, but it was only after her retirement at the age of 55 that she devoted herself entirely to picture book creation. Reflecting on her life's work, Cai underscored the important influence of childhood and said she seeks to capture the child-like sense of wonder in all her creations. "All of my work is directed toward childhood. What I want to tell you is this: childhood is the finest cradle. Why do I make picture books? It is for childhood. Just like the way my grandmother once told me stories and sang me nursery rhymes, I tell those same stories to you through picture books. I paint 'Moon Baba', 'Where the Moon Goes, I Go', and 'Peach Blossom Spring' -- they are all things of childhood. What I am teaching you is to seek, the beauty of seeking. And when you get to the very heart of it, it is the beauty of questioning. Once you carry that beauty of questioning within you, you will find good things for the rest of your life," she said. Cai's picture books are deeply rooted in Chinese folk culture. Drawing nourishment from the colors and forms of folk art, she employs bold hues, exaggerated shapes, and richly textured brushwork that makes her realistic depiction of the earth, grass and sand appear almost touchable on the page. Remarkably, she developed her painting skills without undertaking any formal classes or any systematic training in fine arts. In recent years, Cai has found unexpected fame through viral videos online as many young people seek to draw inspiration from her prolific and enduring career. Yet her life journey offers a quiet counter-narrative: she became an editor at 36, reached her creative peak only after retiring at 55, and stepped onto the world stage at 80. She said this shows there is no linear path to success, nor any age limit on when it can be achieved. "I believe nothing in life is wasted. There are no scraps, no offcuts, not a single part that can be left out. Everything comes together to make you, to make me. Every kind of experience, your despondency and pain, makes you wholly yourself. Even if life has granted me hardship, I will enjoy it," said Cai. When asked about the growing media attention which may follow her after accumulating such prestigious awards, Cai laughed off the notion of chasing recognition, saying that her love for illustration is the vessel which carries her through life. "I never wanted to chase prizes. But if a prize chooses me, well, what can I do? I am happy, of course. Much of what I do is not for the sake of awards; it comes from my own inner need. Picture books are my boat. They ferry me to a good place, where I can see the scenery on the far shore. They are my boat, my passage, rather than the destination.
