Taking effect from September, the curriculum overhaul requires schools to work through the summer break to get ready. "We are having our labs, getting ready, set with ultramodern gadgets that will help us, smart boards and other things, that will help us do the course intensively," said Raphael Duke Torkonoo, academic head of the Accra-based Prime School. The government says the broad reform is designed to strengthen STEM education while introducing future-oriented vocational skills.  While the new curriculum poses challenges for teachers and schools, it also adds room to explore and create the latest technology from students' perspective. "By learning coding and also AI, I can be able to use apps like Scratch, that's (used to) make games and other apps," said Nyhira Twumasiwaa, a student at Prime School. But bringing technology into the classroom is only the first step. Education professionals caution that for the new curriculum to succeed, schools will need trained teachers, computers, reliable internet access, and other infrastructure to make the shift inclusive and effective. Concerns about children misusing AI are also growing, and some fear that it will hinder the development of key analytical skills. "Sometimes when you give them work to do, instead of thinking critically on what you have given them to come up with the answer, they rely solely on the AI and I think with this, the critical thinking aspect, we are going to lose it," said Dora, whose children attend Prime School. Education policy analysts say a coordinated effort is needed to help students and schools adapt. "We need to do certain fundamentals, that is having a national campaign to train the teachers, train even parents for them to become aware. So therefore they also know their role to play; there are other stakeholders like the tech guys, we just have to also bring them on board," said Obenfo Kwasi Gyetuah from the Ghana National Council of Private Schools.
