        <headline xml:lang="en">Imported films gain momentum in China as moviegoers show strong appetite</headline>
        <description role="CCTVPLUSdescrole:Storyline" xml:lang="en">
Imported films have gained significant momentum in China so far this year, with data showing increases in both the number of foreign blockbuster screenings and box office revenues in China's film market.

According to data from the China Film Group Corporation, the country screened 58 imported films in the first half of 2026, generating a combined box office of 3.32 billion yuan (about 493.95 million U.S. dollars), up 629 million yuan (about 93.58 million U.S. dollars) year on year.

The share of imported films in China's total box office rose from 9.22 percent in the same period last year to 19.15 percent.

Since the beginning of the year, multiple imported films have been released in succession. The Chinese market contribution to "Zootopia 2" remained the highest globally, making it a core pillar of the film's worldwide box office.

"Avatar 3" also performed strongly in the Chinese market, reaching a box office of 1.20 billion yuan (about 178.83 million U.S. dollars) in China, making the country its largest overseas market.

Several international films which have been released during China's summer box office season, officially running from June 1 to August 31 and seen as one of the most lucrative periods of the year for the cinema sector, also showed outstanding performance in box office.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" debuted two days earlier than in North America, grossing 824 million yuan (about 122.59 million U.S. dollars) in its opening week, setting a new record for live-action imported films in the past five years.

"The Odyssey," action-adventure directed by renowned filmmaker Christopher Nolan, was released in China on Aug. 14 and sparked a movie-going boom during its preview screenings.

The 4K restored version of the classic "The Shawshank Redemption" and the animated feature "WALL-E," which won the Best Animated Feature at the 81st Academy Awards, also made their debut on Chinese mainland screens in August.

"We've watched 'Minions and Monsters,' 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' and 'The Odyssey' so far this summer," said moviegoers.

The strong box office performance of imported films in China has long attracted global industry attention.

"Overseas studios have always regarded China as a huge and yet-to-be-developed 'gold mine' with great potential. The audience's perspectives and viewpoints on accepting the world have also become more novel, all of which have injected great vigor and vitality into the film market," said Huai Wei, deputy general manager of China Film Co-Production Corporation.

International consulting firms remain optimistic about the long-term growth of China's film market.

Global accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), in its 2025-2029 global entertainment and media report, stated that China's film revenue compound annual growth rate between 2024 and 2029 will reach 5.25 percent, higher than the global average, and that China's share of the global box office will rise to 22 percent by 2029.
