The disaster, which originated from a high-altitude glacier collapse on the Nepalese side, sent a torrent of ice, rock, mud and water hurtling through the mountains, causing huge devastation in a matter of minutes and resulting in significant casualties. The massive mudslide struck the Gyirong Port in Gyirong County of Xizang's Xigaze City on Wednesday morning, and has left at least 16 people dead and some 546 others missing on the Chinese side. Nepali authorities say the death toll there has reached 794, with over 2,400 people believed to be missing. The large-scale rescue operation is continuing on multiple fronts in Xizang and includes over 2,100 rescuers, while 269 vehicles and more than 3,900 sets of equipment have been dispatched. The rescue forces are endeavoring to enter the worst-hit areas via roads, waterways and air space, according to a press conference on Sunday, though officials acknowledged the severe challenges facing the emergency teams working at the site. Days of rains have softened the soil in the worst-affected areas of Gyirong County, with silt up to 2 meters thick creating a "sludge-like" surface, and making the ground treacherous under foot for the rescuers. Amid these grueling conditions, the rescuers have thus been divided into pairs, with one tied to the other to ensure they can assist each other should they get stuck, as they carefully trudge through these areas, checking any blind spots and hidden gullies for signs of life. As support operations are being stepped up, two helicopters were dispatched by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Xizang Military Command which dropped off over 400 kilograms of supplies and a group of 77 professional rescuers to the stricken areas to aid the emergency work. Meanwhile, a major clear-up operation is ongoing in a race to clear debris and restore traffic access on damaged sections of the G216 national highway, a road which serves as a critical link to reach the disaster-hit areas following Wednesday's mudslide. Dramatic aerial footage showed a fleet of excavators and heavy machinery working to move away rocks and large boulders as the riverside water rushed past, with the rescue teams slowly clearing a pathway through the foot of the mountains. As of 16:00 on Sunday, the rescue team has successfully cleared two turning points of the first 'S-shaped' curve which is crucial to give more heavy machinery access, as they push ahead with just over 1.25 kilometers of the rescue passage left to be restored. Meanwhile, technicians in Xizang are working around the clock to repair power facilities which are essential to guarantee the success of rescue operations, with a stable power supply necessary to keep all-important communications running. After the mudslide occurred, multiple barrier lakes were formed in the upstream areas of the Gyirong Port, and the risk of secondary disasters has become one of the most alarming threats facing the disaster response efforts. By Sunday afternoon, the water in two of these barrier lakes had been drained away. "After our on-site observation and technical monitoring, the newly-formed barrier lake has now naturally flowed through, and the water has basically been discharged. The risk is basically controllable. Next, we will also continue to strengthen the observation of the mudslide mass and further enhance monitoring and early warning," said Wang Chenglei, deputy director of the Department of Risk Monitoring and Comprehensive Fire Prevention of the Ministry of Emergency Management. Efforts are also being undertaken to provide care and assistance to the affected residents who have lost their homes and are growing concerned for their loves ones. At Guoba Village of Gyirong's Sale Township, where 105 people have been relocated, psychologists have been dispatched by the National Health Commission to give support to local residents and to emergency workers on the frontlines. "We are adopting many methods such as readying staff for on-site visits, conducting counseling services and providing mental health support to the affected people. In addition, we will also train medical staff on the frontlines of the resettlement sites, teaching them coping strategies to handle their own experiences," said Zou Ling, deputy director of the Emergency Office of the West China Hospital of Sichuan University who is among the many professionals dispatched to the disaster-hit county. Meanwhile, as neighboring Nepal is busy carrying out its own rescue operations, China has provided cross-border assistance, with aid supplies being sent to Kathmandu on Sunday, according to the China International Development Cooperation Agency. A team of Chinese tunnel experts have also been dispatched to help with a complex rescue situation where several workers are believed to be trapped at an under-construction hydro-power plant.
