Canadian residents remain resolute in support of their government's response to the tariffs imposed by the U.S., with many saying the country has to stand up for its sovereignty and be prepared to push back.

Trade tensions have been rising between the two North American neighbors in recent weeks after the United States imposed 50-percent tariffs on about 20 billion dollars' worth of Canadian goods effective Aug. 22, with Canada responding with its own measures.

Canada's counter tariffs on an equivalent value of U.S. imports took effect early Tuesday, with no last minute talks between the two sides before the measures came into force.

According to media reports, the Canadian list targets U.S. states with close trade ties to Canada, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as core industries such as steel, aluminum and motorcycle manufacturing.

The measures mirror U.S. duties on Canadian steel and aluminum and favor goods that Canadian businesses can source elsewhere, limiting the impact on domestic prices.

In Ontario, residents say they are watching the dispute with a degree of anxiety over the potential economic repercussions but are firm in their view that Canada has to fight back.

"There's been this overarching [approach] for decades of trying to keep things in a bubble, but now someone else has burst that bubble, and we have got to find out which direction we're going to go, and we're looking everywhere. And I appreciate what the prime minister and the government's doing," said a resident.

"I think any sort of tariff war is going to be harmful for every worker. But that doesn't mean that Canadians shouldn't stand up for their sovereignty. I think Canadian sovereignty is incredibly important and we should push back," said another.
