The Navy of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Monday that a super oil tanker exploded and caught fire after hitting naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a claim the United States has denied.
According to the IRGC Navy, the oil tanker was seeking to cross the Strait of Hormuz via the "forbidden" route in the southern waterway when the incident occurred.
On the same day, the U.S. side rejected this account, saying the tanker caught fire after being hit by a drone attack.
Warnings about the dangers of this route had been issued previously, according to the statement published on the IRGC's official news outlet Sepah News.
In the statement, the IRGC Navy said that the Strait of Hormuz has been blocked and remains under Iran's "smart control".
Following U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, Tehran restricted passage through the strategic waterway, while U.S. forces imposed a naval blockade targeting vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports.
Ship-tracking data showed that the daily number of vessels transiting through the strait dropped to single digits over the weekend, falling below the recent 10-day average of 14 vessels per day.
Four vessels, including a gas carrier, exited the strait over the weekend, while 10 cargo ships entered the waterway.
However, these figures do not include vessels that passed through the strait with their Automatic Identification System (AIS) switched off.
The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly 20 percent of the world's seaborne oil flows and significant shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fertilizers.
Before the U.S.-Israeli strikes, around 125 large commercial vessels could pass through the strait every day, including oil tankers, gas carriers, bulk carriers, and container ships.

Nach Angaben der IRGC-Marine versuchte der Öltanker, die Straße von Hormus über die „verbotene“ Route im südlichen Teil der Meerenge zu durchqueren, als sich der Vorfall ereignete.
Am selben Tag wies die US-Seite diese Darstellung zurück und erklärte, der Tanker sei nach einem Drohnenangriff in Brand geraten.
Laut einer Erklärung, die auf der offiziellen Nachrichtenplattform des IRGC, „Sepah News“, veröffentlicht wurde, waren zuvor bereits Warnungen vor den Gefahren dieser Route ausgesprochen worden.
Demnach sei die Straße von Hormus blockiert und stehe weiterhin unter der „intelligenten Kontrolle“ des Iran.
Nach den Angriffen der USA und Israels auf den Iran am 28. Februar hatte Teheran die Durchfahrt durch die strategisch wichtige Wasserstraße eingeschränkt, während die US-Streitkräfte eine Seeblockade gegen Schiffe verhängten, die iranische Häfen anlaufen oder von dort auslaufen.
Daten zur Schiffsverfolgung zeigen, dass die tägliche Zahl der die Meerenge durchquerenden Schiffe am Wochenende auf einstellige Werte gesunken ist und damit unter den jüngsten 10-Tages-Durchschnitt von 14 Schiffen pro Tag fiel.
Vier Schiffe, darunter ein Gastanker, verließen die Meerenge am Wochenende, während zehn Frachtschiffe in die Wasserstraße einfuhren.
In diesen Zahlen sind jedoch keine Schiffe enthalten, die die Meerenge mit ausgeschaltetem Automatischen Identifikationssystem (AIS) passierten.
La Armada del Cuerpo de los Guardianes de la Revolución Islámica (CGRI) de Irán informó el lunes que un superpetrolero explotó y se incendió tras chocar con minas navales, cuando intentaba atravesar el estrecho de Ormuz por una ruta "prohibida" al sur de esta vía navegable.

Se habían emitido advertencias sobre los peligros de esta ruta, de acuerdo con un comunicado publicado en Sepah News, el medio de comunicación oficial del CGRI.
La Armada del CGRI hizo hincapié que el estrecho de Ormuz ha sido bloqueado y permanece bajo el "control inteligente" de Irán, según el comunicado.
El origen de la actual crisis se remonta al 28 de febrero, cuando, tras los ataques de Estados Unidos e Israel contra Irán, Teherán restringió el paso a través de esta vía marítima estratégica.
