The Gaza Strip is suffering heavy losses and facing an uncertain future three years into the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. 

Wednesday marks the third anniversary of the Oct 7, 2023 attacks. Gaza is now devastated, with rubble strewn across much of the territory. Nearly 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 174,000 injured, while around 90 percent of Gaza's civilian infrastructure has been destroyed. 

Gaza's economy is also taking a heavy blow. Following the outbreak of the conflict in 2023, Palestinian gross domestic product (GDP) shrank significantly in 2024 and grew 4.3 percent on a low base in 2025, but still 20 percent below its 2022 level, according to a United Nations (UN) report released last month. 

Across the occupied Palestinian territories, hundreds of thousands of jobs have been lost, resulting in an estimated total loss of labor income of 2.8 billion U.S. dollars. Approximately 92 percent of local economic entities have been damaged or destroyed. 

Many of the businesses that once created jobs, produced goods and provided services no longer exist. Agriculture has been hit particularly hard, with only 1.5 percent of agricultural land in Gaza remaining accessible and undamaged. Many families have lost the land they depend on for survival, and local food supplies are increasingly reliant on external aid. 

The unemployment rate in Gaza stands at 78 percent. More than half of the enclave's hospitals and primary care clinics are unable to function properly, while 93 percent of school facilities require complete reconstruction. 

A brief ceasefire last year has not eased the situation or brought about a turning point. On Oct 8, 2025, under the pressure and mediation of Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye, the United States and other parties, Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas agreed to the first phase of a ceasefire proposed by the United States. 

The main content of the agreement included both sides ceasing military operations; the Israeli army withdrawing to the outskirts of Gaza and declaring the end of the conflict; Israeli detainees and Palestinian prisoners being released; and humanitarian aid supplies entering the Gaza Strip on a large scale. 

Although Hamas and Israel have accepted the ceasefire agreement, they remain divided on its content and implementation procedures. Therefore, both sides have not achieved a true ceasefire. Israel continues strikes on Hamas militants as Palestinian casualties continue to rise. 

Gaza's future remains uncertain. In the past year, both the Israeli and Palestinian sides, as well as relevant parties involved in mediation, have put forward different plans and ideas regarding the governance and security arrangements for the enclave. 

Israel vigorously excludes the post-war security arrangements and governance of Gaza that involve Hamas. The United States advocates for the establishment of an international organization led by the U.S. to take over and govern Gaza. The Palestinian National Authority insists on leading the post-war governance of Gaza. Under pressure, Hamas has stated that it can accept not participating in Gaza's management. 

As Gaza spirals deeper into catastrophe and the conflict drags on, a lingering question remains: What future lies beyond war and hunger? 

Hamas attacked Israel from Gaza On Oct 7, 2023 and killed about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage, prompting Israel to launch a war on Hamas in Gaza.

La Franja de Gaza se encuentra sumida en una crisis humanitaria catastrófica y una devastación estructural sin precedentes. Tras tres años de la última escala del conflicto palestino-israelí, el futuro del devastado enclave costero es incierto. 

El miércoles se cumple el tercer aniversario del incidente del 7 de octubre de 2023. Ese día, Hamás atacó a Israel desde Gaza, matando a unas 1.200 personas y tomando a 251 rehenes, lo que llevó a Israel a iniciar una guerra contra Hamás y los gazatíes. 

Gaza se encuentra devastada, con el 90 por ciento de la infraestructura civil del territorio destruida y escombros esparcidos por gran parte del territorio. Además, cerca de 74.000 palestinos han muerto y más de 174.000 han resultado heridos, mientras un número indeterminado de cadáveres continúan bajo las ruinas. 

La economía de Gaza sufre un duro golpe. En 2025, el PIB per cápita de Gaza se situó en 212 dólares estadounidenses, apenas un 17 por ciento del nivel registrado en 2022, mientras más del 90 por ciento de la población en edad de trabajar estaba desempleada, según un informe de la ONU publicado el mes pasado. 

En el conjunto de los territorios palestinos ocupados, se han perdido cientos de miles de empleos, lo que ha provocado una pérdida total estimada de ingresos laborales de 2.800 millones de dólares estadounidenses. Aproximadamente el 92 por ciento de las entidades económicas locales han sufrido daños o han sido destruidas. 

Muchas de las empresas que antes generaban empleo, producían bienes y prestaban servicios ya no existen. La tasa de desempleo en Gaza se sitúa en el 78 por ciento.

El sector agrícola ha sido especialmente castigado: solo el 1,5 por ciento de las tierras agrícolas de Gaza sigue siendo accesible y está intacto. Muchas familias han perdido las tierras de las que dependen para sobrevivir, y el suministro local de alimentos depende cada vez más de la escasa ayuda externa. 

Los sistemas sanitario y educativo se encuentran al borde del colapso. Más de la mitad de los hospitales y clínicas de atención primaria del enclave no pueden funcionar correctamente, mientras el 93 por ciento de las instalaciones escolares requieren una reconstrucción completa. 

El breve alto el fuego del año pasado no alivió la situación ni marcó un punto de inflexión. El 8 de octubre de 2025, bajo la presión y mediación de Egipto, Catar, Turquía, Estados Unidos y otras partes, Israel y Hamás acordaron la primera fase del alto el fuego. 

Los puntos principales del acuerdo incluían el cese de las operaciones militares por ambas partes; la retirada del ejército israelí a las afueras de Gaza y la declaración del fin del conflicto; la liberación de los detenidos israelíes y los prisioneros palestinos; así como la entrada de suministros de ayuda humanitaria a gran escala en la Franja de Gaza. 

Sin embargo, aunque Hamás e Israel aceptaron dicho acuerdo de alto el fuego, Israel continúa atacando la Franja de Gaza y la cifra de víctimas palestinas sigue aumentando. Hoy en día, ambas partes difieren en cuanto al contenido y los procedimientos para la implementación de dicho acuerdo. Por ello, no se ha conseguido un alto el fuego real. 

El futuro de Gaza es incierto. Durante el último año, tanto la parte israelí como la palestina, así como las partes implicadas en la mediación, han propuesto diversos planes e ideas sobre la gobernanza y los mecanismos de seguridad para el enclave. Israel rechaza categóricamente cualquier esquema de seguridad o gobernanza de Gaza para la posguerra que incluya a Hamás. Estados Unidos aboga por crear una organización internacional liderada por el propio país para asumir el control y la administración de Gaza. La Autoridad Nacional Palestina insiste en liderar la gobernanza de Gaza tras la guerra. Bajo presión, Hamás ha declarado que podría aceptar no participar en la gestión del territorio. 

Mientras Gaza se hunde más profundamente en la catástrofe y el conflicto se prolonga, persiste una pregunta: ¿qué futuro aguarda más allá de la guerra y el hambre?

Drei Jahre nach Beginn des palästinensisch-israelischen Konflikts leidet der Gazastreifen weiterhin unter den schweren Verlusten und steht vor einer ungewissen Zukunft. 

An diesem Mittwoch jährt sich der Angriff vom 7. Oktober 2023 zum dritten Mal. Der Gazastreifen ist mittlerweile verwüstet, weite Teile des Gebiets sind nur noch Ruinen. Nahezu 74 000 Palästinenser wurden getötet, mehr als 174 000 verletzt. Rund 90 Prozent der zivilen Infrastruktur im Gazastreifen ist zerstört. 

Auch die Wirtschaft im Gazastreifen hat einen schweren Schlag erlitten. Nach dem Ausbruch des Konflikts 2023 ist das palästinensische Bruttoinlandsprodukt (BIP) im Jahr 2024 erheblich geschrumpft. 2025 ist es von niedriger Basis aus um 4,3 Prozent gewachsen, liegt aber noch immer 20 Prozent unter dem Wert von 2022. Dies geht aus einem letzten Monat veröffentlichten Bericht der Vereinten Nationen (UN) hervor. 

In den besetzten palästinensischen Gebieten sind Hunderttausende Arbeitsplätze verloren gegangen, was schätzungsweise zu einem Gesamtverlust an Arbeitseinkommen von 2,8 Milliarden US-Dollar geführt hat. Etwa 92 Prozent der lokalen Wirtschaftseinheiten wurden beschädigt oder zerstört. 

Viele der Unternehmen, die einst Arbeitsplätze schufen, Waren produzierten und Dienstleistungen anboten, existieren nicht mehr. Die Landwirtschaft wurde besonders hart getroffen, nur noch 1,5 Prozent der landwirtschaftlichen Flächen im Gazastreifen sind zugänglich und unbeschädigt. Viele Familien haben das Land verloren, von dem sie für ihr Überleben abhängig waren, und die lokale Nahrungsmittelversorgung ist zunehmend auf externe Hilfe angewiesen. 

Die Arbeitslosenquote im Gazastreifen liegt derzeit bei 78 Prozent. Mehr als die Hälfte der Krankenhäuser und Einrichtungen zur medizinischen Grundversorgung funktionieren nicht mehr, während 93 Prozent der Schulinfrastruktur vollständig wiederaufgebaut werden müssen.

Eine kurze Waffenruhe im vergangenen Jahr hat die Lage weder entspannt noch eine Wende herbeigeführt. Am 8. Oktober 2025 einigten sich Israel und die palästinensische militante Gruppe Hamas unter dem Druck und mit der Vermittlung Ägyptens, Katars, der Türkei, der Vereinigten Staaten und anderer Parteien auf die erste Phase einer von den Vereinigten Staaten vorgeschlagenen Waffenruhe. 

Die wichtigsten Punkte des Abkommens umfassten die Einstellung der militärischen Operationen beider Seiten, den Rückzug der israelischen Armee an den Rand des Gazastreifens und eine Erklärung zur Beendung des Konflikts, die Freilassung israelischer Geiseln und palästinensischer Gefangener sowie die umfassende Einfuhr humanitärer Hilfsgüter in den Gazastreifen.

Obwohl die Hamas und Israel dem Abkommen zur Waffenruhe zugesagt haben, bleiben sie über dessen Inhalt und Umsetzung uneinig. Daher konnte zwischen den beiden Seiten keine echte Waffenruhe herbeigeführt werden. Israel setzt seine Angriffe auf die Hamas fort, während die Zahl der palästinensischen Opfer weiter steigt.

Die Zukunft des Gazastreifens bleibt ungewiss. Im vergangenen Jahr haben sowohl die israelische als auch die palästinensische Seite sowie die an der Vermittlung beteiligten Parteien unterschiedliche Pläne und Konzepte hinsichtlich der Regierungsführung und der Sicherheitsregelungen für den Gazastreifen vorgelegt. 

Israel lehnt Regelungen zur Sicherheit und zur Regierungsführung im Gazastreifen nach dem Krieg, die die Hamas einbeziehen, kategorisch ab. Die Vereinigten Staaten befürworten die Einrichtung einer von den USA geführten internationalen Organisation, die den Gazastreifen übernehmen und verwalten soll. Die Palästinensische Autonomiebehörde besteht wiederum darauf, die Regierungsverantwortung für den Gazastreifen nach dem Krieg zu übernehmen. Unter Druck hat die Hamas schließlich erklärt, auf eine Beteiligung an der Verwaltung des Gazastreifens verzichten zu können. 

Während der Gazastreifen weiter in die Krisenspirale abrutscht und sich der Konflikt noch immer hinzieht, stellt sich die drängende Frage: Was liegt jenseits von Krieg und Hunger? 

Am 7. Oktober 2023 griff die Hamas Israel aus dem Gazastreifen an, tötete etwa 1200 Menschen und verschleppte 251 Menschen als Geiseln. Israel reagierte mit einem Krieg gegen die Hamas im Gazastreifen.
