Storyline

Many residents of the Syrian city of Palmyra recaptured from the Islamic State (IS) are still unable to return home due to damaged local infrastructure.

Almost all of Palmyra's buildings were destroyed after the war, and essentially no residents live within the city. A bus route from Homs to Palmyra was opened after the city was recaptured, but the only residents who returned were those who had come to sort out their possessions.

"We are glad to see Palmyra recaptured and happy that we can go back to our hometown. But we never imagined that it would become like this. The houses are damaged, some of the furniture is gone, and the streets are ruined. It is absolutely not suitable for living. We want to go back, but there's no water or electricity. And also, it is unsafe and unsanitary," said Um Ibrahim, a resident.

Palmyra was one of Syria's most important relics of the ancient world and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. The city suffered heavy damage when it was occupied by the militant group IS in May 2015. Rescue work of the relics started this year on March 27, after the city was recaptured by Syrian government forces.
