Storyline


The 60th annual session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) kicked off in Vienna on Monday, with representatives from 168 countries attending the opening ceremony.

The IAEA secretary general Yukiya Amano reviewed the achievements made by the IAEA over the past 60 years.

"The agency has achieved a lot in the past six decades. By making nuclear science and technology available to improve human wellbeing and prosperity, we have made a real difference to the lives of millions of people throughout out the world. We have also made a unique contribution to international peace and security through our work to verify that nuclear material remains in peaceful uses," said Amano.

Amano also mentioned that most of the IAEA members are developing countries and affirmed that nuclear technology is playing an increasingly important role in energy, agriculture and medical science.

To ensure the peaceful use of nuclear energy, IAEA has set up organizations in over 180 countries to carefully monitor nuclear facilities and materials.

"I am confident that by working together, real progress can be made in enhancing the nuclear non-proliferation regime, and promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy," said the U.S Secretary of Energy, Ernest Moniz.

The head of Iran’s atomic energy organization Ali Akbar Salehi also spoke at the opening ceremony. He is the first Iranian representative has ever been sent to IAEA conference in 12 years.

"I would like to express my gladness for participating in this general conference, which happens to be coincident with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the IAEA," said Salehi.

There are also 30 exhibitions, forums and sideline talks scheduled to take place during the week-long conference, which aims to display member nations' achievements in the nuclear science and technology fields.
