Storyline

China has made great progress in nuclear technology and in the peaceful use of nuclear power, said Wang Yiren, head of the Chinese delegation on Monday at the 60th annual session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria.

Wang, also deputy director of the China Atomic Energy Authority, said nuclear power will play a bigger role in achieving the UN's Agenda for Sustainable Development by 2030 as nuclear technology has wide applications in ensuring energy security, protecting the environment, coping with climate change and enhancing anti-terrorism collaboration.

Wang said China has developed nuclear energy as an important measure for promoting energy conservation, emissions reduction, pollution prevention and control, steady economic growth, energy structure optimization and realization of green and sustainable development.

"There are 35 nuclear power generating units in operation in China and 20 others are in the process of construction. China has accumulated rich experience in the design, construction and operation of nuclear power plants," said Wang.

Wang noted that China has made a breakthrough in nuclear technology in recent years.

"The China-designed third generation technology "Hualong No. 1" has been applied for the first time both in China and the world. The construction has started and is progressing smoothly, indicating the technology has won widespread approval for its safety and economical efficiency. China's large advanced pressurized water reactor CAP1400 and multi-purpose small modular reactor ACP100 have passed the IAEA safety review and are fully qualified for application in project engineering," said Wang.

With a rigorous nuclear regulatory system, China has kept a good safety record, Wang said, adding that China has conducted extensive cooperation with the international community in building a global nuclear safety system and promoting the development of nuclear power.

Wang said China would like to work together with the international community in making greater contributions in making nuclear power benefit peace, prosperity and development.
