Storyline

A gas explosion in a coal mine left 18 miners dead and two missing in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region on Tuesday

A rescue mission involving over 200 people is currently underway at the site in the city of Shizuishan. Efforts in searching for the two missing miners have been hindered by water and high density of gas in the mine.

At a press conference held by local authorities at 00:40 on Wednesday morning, the deputy mayor of Shizuishan said that the mining operations at the exploded mine were illegal and local police have already detained the mine owner.

Gui Laibao, deputy chief of China’s top mining safety watchdog, the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety, has set off to the accident site to oversee the rescue operation.
