Chinese President Xi Jinping Friday met with former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in Beijing, saying China will work closely with the United States at a new starting point to maintain the smooth and stable development of bilateral relationship.
The development of China-U.S. ties since the forging of diplomatic ties has proven the common interests far outweigh differences, Xi said.
Xi stressed that China and the United States should read each other's strategic intentions correctly and abandon the zero-sum mentality, stick to non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and carry out mutually beneficial cooperation, and continue building a new type of major-country relationship between China and the United States.
He also appreciated Kissinger's long-standing contributions to promoting the development of China-U.S. relations, saying a sustained, healthy and stable bilateral relationship conforms to the fundamental interests of both peoples, and is conducive to the peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world.
The two sides should maintain close high-level exchanges and cooperation, give full play to the role of the inter-governmental dialogue and consultation mechanism, expand pragmatic cooperation in various fields and strengthen communication and coordination on major international and regional issues, Xi said.
He said the two countries should manage and control their differences in a constructive manner.
Kissinger expressed that as an old friend of China, he believes it is the expectation of the U.S. new administration to facilitate sustained, stable and better growth of U.S.-China relations.
He said he is honored to have made contributions to the development of U.S.-China relations, and will continue playing an active role in increasing mutual understanding, exchanges and cooperation between the two counties.
