Storyline

The FIFA Council on Tuesday has decided in favor of expanding the FIFA World Cup from a 32-team to a 48-team competition as of the 2026.

The announcement was made by the incumbent FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) President Giovanni Infantino at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.

"The decision on the World Cup 2026 will, which will be played with 48 teams in a form of which comprises 16 groups of three, the top two qualified to round of 32. That's 16 more countries, some of which probably would never have dreamt to participate in the World Cup, will have the chance to participate and many more would have the chance to dream to participate in the World Cup. So, from our sides at the FIFA council, there's only positive decision when it comes to football development," said Infantino.

The 48-team competition format has been drawn up in such a way that there is no reduction in the overall number of rest days and a guaranteed maximum of seven matches for the teams reaching the final, while the current 32-day tournament duration is kept, so as not to increase the length of time for which clubs have to release their players.

The decision was taken following a thorough analysis, based on a report that included four different format options. The study took into account such factors as sporting balance, competition quality, impact on football development, infrastructure and so on.

Some critics believe the expansion, the first in nearly 20 years, will dilute the quality of the competition. FIFA maintains it is the right decision for world football.

"We are in the 21st century, and we have to shape the football World Cup of the 21st century. It's not any more 20th century. It is the future. We have to look into that football is more than just Europe and South America; football is global," Infantino said.

Over the course of its next meetings, the FIFA Council is set to discuss further details regarding the competition, including the slot allocation per confederation.

FIFA noted that for countries to bid for the right to host the 2026 edition, a process is currently scheduled to culminate in May 2020.
