At least 20 people have died, 70 were injured and more than 30 others remain missing after a commercial building caught on fire and collapsed on Thursday morning in Tehran, capital of Iran.
According to Iran's state television, a fire broke out in the building at about 08:00 on Thursday. About three hours later, the building began to collapse, eventually burying the firefighters.
Tehran mayor Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said at least 20 firefighters lost their lives and more than 70 others were injured. He warned that the death toll may rise.
The rescue operation is still underway as more than 30 firefighters are trapped in the rubble.
The building, dating from the early 1960s, was once the highest in the Iranian capital, serving as a shopping center with more than 500 stores and workshops.
"The fire broke out at about eight o'clock. The fire got worse, spreading from the ninth floor. The whole building was filled with thick smoke. We could not see anything in the pervasive smoke," said Reza, who had escaped from the burning building.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has ordered a thorough investigation into the fire.
