Storyline

Tense security was evident on the streets of Washington D.C. for President Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony on Friday.

An estimated 800,000 people gathered in the U.S capital city to see Trump's historic swearing-in ceremony. Over 100 rallying groups, either for or against Trump, also came to Washington, with reports of protests taking place across the city adding to the tension.

A total of 28,000 policemen were directly or indirectly engaged with maintaining security at the ceremony. Over 7,000 national guards were called in from over 40 states across the country to respond in case of emergency.

All buildings on the sides of Pennsylvania Avenue were emptied with only police officers being placed on rooftops. Blockades and armed police were seen all around Washington's streets from the White House to Capitol Hill.

In light of recent "lone wolf" terrorist attacks in Europe, unauthorized vehicles were strictly forbidden access anywhere near the ceremony.

Despite the estimated turnout figures for Trump's inauguration being only half the number who turned out to see Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration, the total cost for this year's security operation has reached 100 million dollars.
