Storyline

Large crowds of protesters and supporters thronged the streets in Washington D.C. on Friday as Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States.

A few hours ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, the city was already filled with unrest and tension.

Crowds of protesters marched through streets near the White House in downtown Washington, holding placards and banners such as "Resist Trump" and "Humans Can Do Better."

Meanwhile supporters, many of whom wore red hats with Trump's campaign slogan on them or held the U.S. national flags, had verbal fights with the anti-Trump protesters.

A Trump supporter shouted "work harder!" towards one of the protester, with the latter yelling back:"You've just made the government a business and they don't care about you."

"I think he is really the man of the hour. We need what he has to offer. He doesn't care if you like him, he doesn't care if he is popular. He is going to do what is needed to restore this country," said a Trump supporter named Hope.

Another supporter named Corey said he tried to talk to the protesters, but they usually had some indecent remarks to say to him.

The protesters expressed their disappointment at the new president.

"I'm proud for America, but I'm deeply disappointed by Trump and his nominations," said a protester named Jacob.

Some insisted that Trump’s presidency is illegitimate.

"Because I'm a feminist and an environmentalist and humanitarian and I am offended; and it's an illegitimate presidency," said protester named Courneitey.

Many protesters tried to block several entrances into the Inaugural Parade route on the Pennsylvania Avenue, as many Trump supporters waited for checking in.

Massive security was imposed in downtown Washington Friday as many streets around the White House and Capitol Hill were blocked, creating a heavily fortified security zone.

As many as 28,000 security officials, including some 7,800 National Guard troops, were deployed to guard the checkpoints and the Parade Route.

Trump was sworn in at a swearing-in ceremony held at the Capitol Hill, which was attended by about 900,000 people.

Right after the end of the swearing-in ceremony, a new wave of violence erupted near the White House where protesters smashed windows, damaged cars and threw rocks at riot police.

Police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the protesters who hurled objects, including bottles and rocks, at them near the 12th and K streets, only blocks away from the White House.

Washington D.C. police said that 95 people were arrested in the riot.
