Storyline

China is to build the world's brightest synchrotron radiation light source in Beijing during the 13th Five Year Plan period (2016-2020), according to a science seminar held in Beijing on Wednesday.

The synchrotron radiation light source is a high-energy strong light source that generates synchrotron radiation in electron deflection. It can measure the atomic structure of any substance with X-ray.

The "Beijing Light Source" will reduce the electron emission to 0.1 nm-rad, almost the limitation of light diffraction.

"In the details of substances, one important thing is it has to be bright enough. For example, when you look at something in the room with a flashlight, the brighter the flashlight, the clearer you can see. It is similar in science. The resolution ratio is directly related with the brightness," said Dong Yuhui, researcher from Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

There are currently more than 50 synchrotron radiation light sources in the world, providing X-rays in different energy ranges and various advanced experimental technologies.

"This light source will be mainly applied to two aspects. One is to meet national major demands that are closely related with national security. The second is to provide a very high resolution ratio both in terms of space and energy to enable us to understand the hyperfine structure with complicated system. In this way, we can promote the progress in basic science," said Dong.

China has built three generations of synchrotron radiation light sources so far, namely Beijing Electron Positron Collider, Hefei Light Source and Shanghai Light Source.

The Beijing Light Source will be the fourth generation.

Upon completion, the designed light source will be 70 times brighter than the United States National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) that has been built not long ago, and 10 times brighter than Sweden's MAX IV that has been built but not been put into operation, Dong said.

The Beijing Light Source project is scheduled to start in November 2018 and be finished in around six years, with a planned investment of 4.8 billion yuan (about 698.4 million U.S. dollars).
