Complex terrain and bad weather are posing a challenge for rescuers who have been working round the clock to find more survivors at an avalanche-hit hotel in the town of Penne in central Italy since the disaster struck on Wednesday.
As of Saturday evening, rescuers have pulled nine people alive from the snow-covered rubble of Hotel Rigopiano, according to the civil protection department.
But there have been difficulties in locating over 20 people who are believed to remain trapped under the debris. With the operation proceeding slowly, any possible survivors are facing a fourth night in the freezing mountains, more than 72 hours after a wall of snow smashed into the four-star hotel on Wednesday afternoon. The avalanche came after several earthquakes struck the mountainous region earlier in the day.
A base camp for rescue workers was set up in the town where ambulances, snowplows and other vehicles have been standing by.
Enrica Centi, a spokesperson for the rescue service, said the winding, snow-covered mountain terrain is hampering the effort of rescuers who have been trying to dig a tunnel through the rubble in order to reach the trapped victims.
"The terrain is mixed, which has been partly affected by the earthquake and partly caused by the avalanche," she said.
Meanwhile, low visibility caused by heavy snow and fog since Friday has also been hindering the operation. There is also a risk of a further avalanche occurring due to the bad weather.
Luigi D'Angelo, an official from the civil protection department, said the search and rescue operation will continue until all the victims are accounted for.
"There are some rooms in the hotel which remain intact. They have not been swallowed by the avalanche. There must be survivors there. So we won't lose hope. We will continue searching until we cover each and every corner of the entire hotel," he said.
Some 29 people including 22 guests and seven employees were believed to have been inside the hotel when the incident occurred. The avalanche reportedly have killed two people.
