Both newborn population and the percentage of second child births increased in 2016 since the two-child policy came into effect on the first day of the year, the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) said Sunday at a press conference in Beijing.
According to the NHFPC statistics, the newborn population reached 17.86 million in 2016, 1.4 million more than the average figure for the years from 2011 to 2015, and up 11.5 percent over 2015, despite the fact that the number of women of child-bearing age decreased by around five million in the year.
The proportion of second child births in the total newborns rose to 45 percent in 2016, the statistics said, and the figure used to stay at around 30 percent before 2013.
The NHFPC said related departments will further improve the supporting policies and measures for the implementation of the two-child policy to promote the balanced population development in China.
