Storyline

The H7N9 bird flu virus infected 35 and killed seven between Feb. 13 and 23 in the Chinese mainland, but the H7N9 epidemic has been brought under control and the epidemic situation has begun to ease, said China's health authorities on Friday.

According to the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) of China, the previous fast spread of the epidemic has been curbed effectively, however, the virus is still widely found and is transmitted mainly from poultry to human.

Some experts estimated that sporadic cases of H7N9 infection may continue to pop up across China for a period of time.

China's NHFPC and the Ministry of Agriculture will set up seven teams beginning Thursday to monitor and inspect the most affected provinces.

China reported as many as 79 fatalities and 192 infections from H7N9 virus in January in 16 provinces including Fujian, Yunnan and Hunan, which well surpassed the numbers of infection cases in the same period last year.

The situation has prompted health authorities to step up prevention and control measures, including a ban on live poultry trade in places where H7N9 cases have been reported.

H7N9 was first reported in humans in China in March 2013. It is most likely to strike in winter and spring.
