Fayssal Mikdad, Syria's deputy foreign minister, said on Wednesday that there has been necessary coordination between Syria and Iraq in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) group inside of the two countries.
He made the remarks in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) in Damascus.
Iraqi warplanes bombed IS targets in neighboring Syria on Friday, the first time Baghdad has admitted to targeting the extremist group beyond its own borders.
The Syrian government has not made any comment on the Iraqi airstrikes yet.
However, Mikdad confirmed earlier in the interview that "necessary coordination is underway" between Syria and Iraq.
"There is coordination, of course, and we believe there is a united battleground against ISIL in both countries. More coordination is absolutely needed, but the necessary coordination is underway," said Mikdad, using an alternative acronym for IS.
The airstrikes came as Iraqi forces reach the final stages of their operation to oust IS from the northern city of Mosul, the largest remaining stronghold of the militant group in Iraq.
