This round of talks involves the greatest number of participants, with the opposition forces sending representatives from both its political and armed factions to the meeting. All invitees arrived for the talks and kept to their appointments.

"Indeed, developments on the ground while we speak are very much related sadly to offensives and counter-offensives. But all invitees and delegations who are present here and, as you know, we have also the [Syrian] Women's Advisory Board which has been giving me and continues to give me very wise and substantial support. Our feeling is that it was worthy to come and all came, and none of them have threated to leave or not to come which is a sign of maturity and of responsibility, particularly in difficult moments like this one," said de Mistura.

According to the UN resolution 2254, the talks will highlight constructing a transitional authority, setting a schedule and process for drafting a new constitution, holding elections and fighting against terrorism in Syria, but there are still disputes about the agenda.

The Syrian government delegation, headed by Bashar al-Jaafari, has said from the outset that measures to counter terrorism should be prioritized considering the violent terror attacks that have occurred on the ground in Syria.

"This is why we require to start these talks with anti-terrorism issues. This is especially a concern given the terror attacks in Damascus and in the suburb of Hama," said Jaafari.

The Syrian opposition delegation head Nasr al-Hariri, meanwhile, emphasized the need to focus discussions on the issue of political transition.
