I think we are all agreed that there are four-basket issues that need to be talked about. The parties need to engage in a series of discussions about all these issues. The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on Friday applauded China's contribution to advancing the Syrian peace talks.
Shortly after separate discussions with the Syrian government delegation and opposition groups inside the Palace of Nations in Geneva on the day when the Syrian peace talks resumed, de Mistura met with Chinese Special Envoy on Syrian issue Xie Xiaoyan and had in-depth talks with Xie.
During their meeting, the two envoys discussed the tough situation in Syria and China's positive role in pushing forward the peace talks.
In an interview after the meeting, de Mistura told reporters that China has been a very important and positive partner for him in accelerating the peace process of the Syrian issue.
"First of all, I always welcome the opportunity of meeting the special envoy of China. Because China is such a major partner in what we are trying to do, member of the Security Council 'P5' and very much listened to by every country in the region. And from that point of view, the influence they can have and are having is for me, in my job, very important," de Mistura said.
"Secondly, is the wisdom if I may say. The wisdom and good advice that I'm getting. And that's why we're discussing concretely about many things, particularly in how in fact the Chinese influence and involvement in supporting the political process and even the humanitarian aspect of it and it can be even further enhanced. We're counting on it because we have seen how positive your influence can be. That's being the main thrust of our very good discussion," the UN special envoy added.
Standing along with de Mistura, Xie said in the interview that the two envoys have agreed that the progress of peace process for Syria will need joint efforts from all parties involved.
"We have all agreed on one message, a strong message that all the parties should be committed. Strong commitment to ceasefire, to the political settlement through peace dialog. And this is the only way to find a solution at some stage. But we also agreed this is a very complicated issue. It takes time; it takes efforts by everybody, every player involved in the conflict to make a constructive and positive contribution," the Chinese special envoy said.

The Syrian peace talks in Geneva resumed on Friday, which is the fifth and latest round of UN-mediated political talks involving parties of the Syrian government, the opposition, aiming to end the catastrophic six-year Syrian war that killed over 310,000 people and displaced millions of others.
The "P5"or "Big Five" refers to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, namely Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
