"We have a very close working relationship with the Chinese government, and also with AIIB. We will be signing another memorandum of understanding during these meetings. I will be doing so with Jin Liqun, the president of AIIB. The One Belt One Road project is an extremely important one for the Chinese government and also for us. The leadership that China is now taking in the overall world development, I think, is unprecedented. I mean that China has been stepping up and illustrating that it's concerned about the development not just in the neighboring countries or even along the old silk road, but globally."

Storyline

The leadership China is now taking in the overall world development is unprecedented, said Jim Yong Kim, president of the World Bank Group.

Kim made the remarks while responding to questions about his expectations of the upcoming Belt and Road Summit at a press briefing of the 2017 World Bank Group/IMF Spring Meetings on Thursday in Washington D.C.

I mean that China has been stepping up and illustrating that it's concerned about the development not just in the neighboring countries or even along the old silk road, but globally," said Kim.

He also expected more future cooperation between the World Bank and the Chinese Government.

"So our expectation is that our engagement both with the Chinese government and with Chinese efforts, and development both through their own bilateral cooperation, but also through AIIB, will only grow going into the future," said Kim.

Kim also said at the press briefing that he expected a strong future for the world’s economy after years of disappointing global economic growth.

But according to Kim, since there are currently still risks of economic downturns, structural reforms are still needed from capable countries. This will boost the development of a sustainable and inclusive world economy and contribute to the goal of eliminating extreme poverty by 2030.
