Venezuelans who want to enter Colombia must have a valid passport or apply for a special migratory card from May 1, according to Colombia's latest immigration policy.
Since the two countries reopened their border in August 2016, about 40,000 Venezuelans cross into Colombia for work, study and shopping every day. What's more, the number of Venezuelans entering Columbia has been on the rise in recent years.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos Friday visited Cucuta, a Colombian city on the border, and stressed the need to strengthen border management. In Cucuta, Venezuelans buying daily goods can be seen everywhere.
"I come to exchange currency. With foreign currency, I can buy food, clothes and milk for my child -- in a word, all the daily necessities," said a Venezuelan.
According to Colombia's immigration authorities, for those Venezuelans who don't have valid passports, the migratory cards will allow them to enter five Colombian provinces on the border. To enter the rest of Colombia, a Venezuelan must have both a valid passport and a migratory card.
