China's mainland will unswervingly adhere to the 1992 Consensus and deepen cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation to promote the integrated economic and social progress on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, said Zhang Zhijun, director of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office at a conference marking the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises on the Mainland (ATIEM).
Zhang Zhijun said the 1992 Consensus is the fundamental principle guiding cross-Strait relations. Since May 20, 2016, however, the refusal by authorities of the Democratic Progressive Party to acknowledge the Consensus has plunged cross-Strait relations to a freezing point, and spoiled the atmosphere for cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation in various fields.
Zhang stressed that the mainland will hold fast to the 1992 Consensus, firmly oppose "Taiwan independence" and spare no effort to maintain the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.
"Adherence to the the 1992 Consensus as the political foundation for cross-Strait relations will broaden our path of cooperation and development. On the contrary, if this foundation is undermined, the cross-Strait relations will return to the old situation of unrest. On such a major issue of principle that both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China, we brook no ambiguity," said the mainland's Taiwan affairs chief.
As of the end of March this year, the mainland had approved nearly 100,000 Taiwan-funded projects and used around 65.24 billion U.S. dollars of capital from Taiwan enterprises. The mainland has repeatedly reaffirmed its commitment to support the development of Taiwan business people and enterprises despite the negative impacts on cross-Strait relations.
"It is our expectation to see peaceful and stable development, exchanges, mutual beneficial cooperation and win-win outcome on the basis of one-China principle, " said Wang Ping-sheng, chairman of the ATIEM.

He expressed the hope that Taiwan business people and enterprises will firmly uphold the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.
