Chinese nationals and many other citizens in Singapore have started celebrating the traditional Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on May 30 this year, with a variety of cultural activities and carnival games.
On Saturday, a special "dragon boat race" was held in which the participants had to "walk" their boats to the finish line.
Instead of using oars, participants had to form a team of six and stand in line with their feet fastened to parallel, ski-like wooden planks, and work out an effective way to move together without falling down.
The race attracted many participants and onlookers alike.
"We all worked together as a team and helped each other in the game. I had a slight injury during the race, and everybody came to help me. I had a lot of fun," said a Chinese participant.
Other celebrations and activities included traditional dance, food fair, children’s drawing competition and exhibition, as well as an exhibition featuring all the traditional holidays of Singapore's ethnic groups.
A statutory holiday in China, Dragon Boat Festival occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. Celebration usually includes eating zongzi, a sticky rice treat with various fillings wrapped in bamboo leaves, drinking realgar wine and dragon boat racing.
The festival commemorates the death of Chinese poet and minister Qu Yuan during the Warring States between 475 and 221 B.C..
