Storyline

The leaders of Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations pledged to jointly oppose trade protectionism, said Italian Prime Minister Saturday in Taormina.

Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni made the remarks on trade protectionism at a press briefing after the closure of the two-day G7 summit.

"Protecting free trade is not formed automatically. Those who crack down the weakest industry in the society and protect the principles of globalization will finally reach some consensuses with those who protect the national interest," said the Italian Prime Minister.

Some leaders of African countries and representatives from organizations were invited to attend the outreach session of G7 summit to further discuss the innovative development of economy. Analysts thought it was an attempt for G7 to get rid of the tag of "rich man's club".

Gentiloni stressed that his visit to China and Russia before the summit played an active role in the discussion of globalization.

"As the preparation for the Taormina summit, I think I have the obligation to meet some of the leaders of major countries, especially (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin and (Chinese) President Xi Jinping. Although I can't be their ambassadors, I think they will appreciate that I express their ideas in this context as the host country of the summit," said Gentiloni.
