Storyline

The death toll from severe flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Sri Lanka rose to 122 on Saturday, according to the country's Disaster Management Ministry.

Ninety-seven people were still missing, and over 500,000 have been affected by the rain which inflicted heavy losses on southern and western parts of the country on Thursday.

"We pooled money to finally built this house in 2003. Now it has been destroyed by this flooding. The mere thought of it made me very sad, and made my whole family very sad," said Padmalatha, a tea garden worker.

According to the Department of Meteorology, the maximum rainfall reached 553 millimeters, making it the worst natural disaster since 2003 in Sri Lanka.

Local governments are taking active measures to evacuate people in the area to help reduce losses.

"On the afternoon of May 25, we got the message that flooding would possibly hit 46 of 70 areas under our jurisdiction. We immediately made a plan on issuing warning, then sent our subordinates to their respective areas to alert the residents from door to door. Meanwhile, we repeated again and again the warnings through the wire-broadcasting system to urge people to evacuate to safe places," said Himali Rathenaweera, head of Divisional Secretariat of Baddegama in Southern Province.

Rathenaweera said they set up a central kitchen the second day after the flooding and used speedboats to deliver meals and other living necessities to the affected residents.

"Provincial officials visited us and the related departments sent us food and medicine. Things are not so bad so far. We will rebuild our homes as soon as the flood recedes," said Jayantha, a painter.

The Department of Meteorology said on Saturday that while the rain had reduced, monsoonal showers and windy conditions will continue over the south-western part of the island.
