Storyline

People across China held dragon boat races to celebrate the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on May 30 this year.

A grand dragon boat show was staged in Shanghai on Saturday. Unlike the famous boat races, the Luodian Dragon Boat Festival is more like a performance than a competition.

Three white, green and yellow dragon boats took to the water in different formations. Thirteen rowers on each boat rowed in unison, spinning the boat and proudly showing off its colorful flags and regal stylings.

However, in Xuchang City of central China's Henan Province, 374 participants made up 17 teams and competed fiercely over a 300-meter-long stretch of river. They rowed quickly to the throbbing beat of drums, churning up the water with their paddles.

"It's hot today, so is our enthusiasm. We will cheer for them. We hope to witness a great performance. Come on!" said Yu Hanxiao, a local resident.

Also in Nanchang City of east China's Jiangxi province, over 100 amateurs frantically rowed nine dragon boats amid the heat of competition, fired up by the hundreds of cheering spectators lining the riverbanks.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by racing dragon boats and eating zongzi.

Zongzi is a traditional Chinese snack made of sticky rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. The food is usually stuffed with delicious fillings like pork, bean paste, and jujube.
