Storyline

China on Saturday launched a national satellite navigation and positioning system.

Being the largest in the country, the system boasts the widest coverage. Featuring faster speed and higher accuracy, it will be compatible with other satellite navigation systems, such as the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, the Global Position System and the Galileo Global Satellite Navigation System.

"For instance, it can judge whether a new building has sunk, as a newly built structure usually sinks by one or two millimeters and probably more after a longer time. The system is able to censor whether a building, a bridge or a dam is stable," said Bai Guixia, director of the department of surveying and mapping at the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation.

He provided more examples to show the capacity of the system. "It can recognize the exact place where a person is and even the exact door a person is passing through," he added.

The system consists of a national database center, 2,700 base stations, and 30 provincial level database centers. The information provided by the base stations and big data processing will greatly improve the accuracy of satellite positioning and further regulate the supervision and coordination of base stations around the country.

Currently the system has widely been applied to transportation, agriculture, hydraulic engineering and other key areas.
