Storyline


The BRICS countries on Friday released their Tianjin Statement after their meeting of environment ministers in the namesake Chinese city. The five countries have pledged more and strengthened cooperation in facilitating sustainable development of environmental protection and pollution prevention.

At their Tianjin meeting, senior environment officials from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa discussed major challenges and opportunities for achieving sustainable development in economy, society and environment at national, regional and global levels, according to the statement.

These five countries reiterated their commitment to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement. They have called for developed countries to deliver on their commitment as well, to conducting technological transfer to developing countries and to providing financial assistance in the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

"We underscore the need for means of implementing the Paris Agreement, including transfer of technology from developed to developing countries as one of the most critical enabler for climate actions," the statement claimed.

The BRICS countries have also decided to collaborate on biodiversity protection, sustainable use of resources and dealing with pollution, especially air pollution.

"We appreciate that the conservation and sustainable use of the rich biodiversity of BRICS countries is of special significance for the global environment and to achieve the internationally agreed targets and goals," the statement said.

An initiative of sustainable partner cities was also proposed at the Tianjin meeting, in order to enhance cooperation in knowledge sharing, technological transfer between cities.
