Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday visited two north Chinese villages of dire poverty to show his deep concern and cheer the villagers up in the war against poverty under the central leadership.

The two villages, Zhaojiawa Village and Songjiagou New Village, are located in Kelan County, Xinzhou City of Shanxi Province.

Both are in the poor area of the Lyuliang Mountain region, one of the country's 14 extremely poor regions under the centralized resettlement program, as their per capita annual income is around 2,676 yuan.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China(CPC) Central Committee, visited three households in Zhaojiawa Village, and was warmly welcomed by Liu Fuyou, the owner of the first household.

Liu said the annual income of his family of three -- himself, his 71-year-old wife and 92-year-old mother, was some 7,000 yuan, and only a small part, 550 yuan, came from farming. Besides, his wife and mother are in poor physical condition.

After hearing this, Xi commanded the local officials to pay particular close attention to the Lius and other poverty-stricken villagers, and help them in any possible way.

"We've pursued the people-oriented development, and should help those in distress and in need, especially those living in the most impoverished regions. Plus, the superiority of Socialism demands us to concentrate resources to do big things," Xi said, adding, "When it comes to targeted poverty reduction, we should get to the point. And fund allocated for poverty reduction should not be used for other purpose and must never be embezzled."

Then Xi entered another household, where Cao Liuren lives with his wife and their four children in great difficulty.

The third household is the poorest. Here, Xi talked with Wang Sannyu, who has lost her husband and son, and has to attend to her disabled grandson and granddaughter all on her own.

After learning about the study and life of the fatherless, disabled boy and girl, Xi commanded local officials to make special arrangement for their education and life.

To learn details of the local drought-relief measures, Xi went on to inspect a well, which is not very deep, but is the important water source for the villagers as well as their cornfields.
He also visited officials who were sent to help with poverty alleviation and asked them to stay humble, improve their working abilities and realize their value by solving urgent problems for the poor.

"In the new time, we will take many new measures for the key tasks in the rural area. We should ensure the first CPC village committee secretary mechanism, the college-graduate village official mechanism, and the poverty relief working team mechanism. Of them, some will stand out and grow into excellent CPC and government cadres. We should make an effort to cultivate them," Xi said.

"Their contributions and efforts will not go unnoticed after we realize our goal of lifting all people out of poverty by 2020. They stand the test and get experiences, and we will identify them and help them hit their prime," Xi added.

In the afternoon, Xi arrived at the Songjiagou New Village, where new houses have been built for people relocated from other places.

Xi met villager Zhang Guiming and chatted with him about subsidies for resettlement and his new life and troubles.

Before wrapping up his visit, Xi called on the villagers to roll up sleeves and work harder together with the CPC Central Committee to quicken steps for a better life.

"The people's aspiration for a better life is what we should strive for. The Communist Party of China is determined to lead all get rid of poverty and become better off, to live a better life. Just as the old saying goes, 'A sesame stalk puts forth blossoms notch by notch, higher and higher'," Xi said.

"Roll up sleeves, my dear villagers and people, and work harder together with the CPC Central Committee," Xi encouraged.

China has helped the Lyuliang Mountain region through relocation since 1996, and by the end of 2016, more than 500,000 mountain folks were relocated to start their new improved life.

Xi has made dozens of tours to the regions under the centralized resettlement program across the country in the recent five years, calling on more efforts to shake off poverty.
