"The volume the mudslide is estimated to be around three million cubic meters, and are entirely comprised of large rocks. Before the rescue machineries could come into the site, we had to manually lift, shoulder and pull ropes to conduct rescue at a spot where we discovered possible survivors earlier. Right now, four excavators and four forklifts have arrived at the site. And another two small-scale landslides occurred just now in the area of previous landslide, with boulders tumbling down. The current situation is that the area of landslide is so large that the machinery could hardly go inside."

Storyline

Nearly 1,000 rescuers including armed policemen, soldiers and firefighters have arrived at the disaster site to search for the missing people from the massive landslide that occurred on Saturday in a river valley in Maoxian County of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

The severe disaster, triggered by torrential rains, buried 62 homes, and more than 120 people are missing.

After the disaster took place, Maoxian has launched the first-grade emergency response scheme, with first group of 30 armed policemen arriving at site on 8:00 to carry out rescue along with local firefighters and soldiers.

Many local residents also joined the rescue operations. Another 140 policemen are still on their way to Maoxian.

Wang Yongbo, an armed policeman and team leader of Maoxian armed police team, said the current problem for the rescue was that the area of landslide was too large to allow rescue machines to easily enter the site.

The current situation is that the area of landslide is so large that the machinery could hardly go inside," said Wang.

More than 100 soldiers carrying life-detection instruments and rescue ropes have been searching for the missing at the landslide site, while 15 medical personnel, taking helicopters, also hurried to the site to standby for giving treatments to survivors.
