"Of course we have built up a new area, a new location for them, 10-million-euro location. With a quarantine area, with all the needs to fulfill the needs of giant pandas, and now they have to show up if they are really comfortable in Berlin, we have a perfect climate right now for them, so, I think they will be pretty and happy to be here."

19. SOUNDBITE (German) Michael Muller, governing mayor of Berlin:
"The giant panda is a special animal, people don't get to see a giant panda too often. The Berlin Zoo is the only zoo in Germany that houses a giant panda, such zoos are even rare in the entirety of Europe. Giant pandas are so attractive, so special and looks so docile, I think Berlin residents and travelers in Berlin are happy to be able to see a giant panda (in Berlin)."

Storyline

Berlin warmly welcomed the city’s two special new residents - giant panda Meng Meng and Jiao Qing on Saturday after they safely arrived in the German capital from China.

Upon their arrival at the airport Schoenefeld after a long flight from southwest China’s Chengdu City, the pair received a warm welcome from crowds of people waiting on the ground, including Berlin’s governing mayor Michael Muller, and Chinese ambassador to Germany Shi Mingde.

The two will be sent to the Berlin Zoo and spend a few weeks there to adapt to the new environment before meeting the public in July.

Berlin Zoo Director Andreas Knieriem is confident that the giant pandas will adapt to their new terrain soon because the zoo has done everything they can to prepare for the pandas.

"Of course we have built up a new area, a new location for them, 10-million-euro location. With a quarantine area, with all the needs to fulfill the needs of giant pandas, and now they have to show up if they are really comfortable in Berlin, we have a perfect climate right now for them, so, I think they will be pretty and happy to be here," said Knieriem.

Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Muller said that Berlin will become a much more attractive city for both locals and tourists due to the charisma of Meng Meng and Jiao Qing.

"The giant panda is a special animal, people don't get to see a giant panda too often. The Berlin Zoo is the only zoo in Germany that houses a giant panda, such zoos are even rare in the entirety of Europe. Giant pandas are so attractive, so special and looks so docile, I think Berlin residents and travelers in Berlin are happy to be able to see a giant panda (in Berlin)," he said.
